Texas loses football player in tragic car accident

A deadly Texas car accident has led to the driver being hit with criminal charges. The tragedy occurred when the driver lost control of his vehicle in the early morning hours, killing his passenger. Police have now charged the driver, and Dallas Cowboys defensive lineman, with intoxication manslaughter in the car accident.

Authorities believe Josh Brent was traveling at a high rate of speed when his vehicle struck a curb. The impact caused the vehicle to flip at least one time. Motorists did not witness the crash when it happened, but contacted police after they saw the wreckage of the vehicle. When officers arrived at the crash scene, the driver was pulling the man's body from the burning vehicle. The passenger was unresponsive and later pronounced dead at the hospital.

Brent underwent field sobriety testing at the scene and was arrested for suspicion of driving while intoxicated. Before officers took him to jail, they took him to the hospital for medical treatment for some non-life threatening injuries. While he was there, he also submitted to a blood draw for a toxicology report.

Brent could be face up to 20 years in a Texas prison if convicted of the charges pending against him. When a car accident like this occurs, it is understandably devastating to a victim's family. Although he is facing criminal charges and the likelihood of a prison sentence if convicted, he may still also be held civilly liable if the other player's family decides to seek legal action against him and proves he negligently caused the accident. This will not change the tragic outcome of the car accident, but could at least help prevent this personal tragedy from becoming a financial one as well.
