Car accident in Sinton leaves 1 dead, 8 injured

On the evening of Friday March 22, a tragic car accident took the life of one woman and left eight others badly injured, according to San Patricio County authorities. The car accident occurred when a bus leaving San Antonio ran the red light at the intersection of Highways 181 and 188, just east of Sinton. The bus struck the side of a small car, causing several of the car's passengers to be ejected from the vehicle.

An investigation launched by the Department of Public Safety concluded that the occupants who were thrown from the car were not wearing seat belts at the time of the crash. All eight injured parties, including two young girls aged 12 and 15, were airlifted by Halo Flight to local hospitals in the Corpus Christi County area. One woman was pronounced dead at the scene, but officials have yet to release additional information as to her identity or the nature of her injuries.

The car accident is still under investigation by authorities, including police and the Department of Public Safety, but it has been confirmed the bus ran the red light while traveling east along Highway 181. Under normal circumstances, the penalty for running a red light is a fine. In the case of t-bone accidents, the driver could face much more serious charges, especially considering the car accident led to the death of at least one woman and left several others in critical condition.

This tragic bus vs. car accident could spawn multiple legal claims. The surviving family of the deceased woman, as well as those seriously injured in the crash, retain the right to pursue lawsuits against the bus driver and the bus company. To prevail, they will need to establish the driver caused the collision by ignoring the red light. They may be helped in that regard by any criminal conviction that is obtained against the bus driver. If he is convicted, proof of it may be offered as evidence of liability in a related civil action.
