Drunk driver kills Harris County veteran police officer

Drunk driving destroys lives. There is simply no way around it. Drivers who choose to get behind the wheel after imbibing are putting more people's safety at risk than just their own. And when drunk driving takes innocent victims, it is especially tragic. Harris County has been left shocked when one of its public servants was killed in an accident recently by a drunk driver.

The victim, a sergeant with the Harris County sheriff's office, was killed early one morning when a drunk driver ran a red light and struck the driver's side of the officer's pickup truck.

The 22-year-old drunk driver is not a U.S. citizen, although it's unknown if the man is a legal resident of the United States. He has been charged with intoxication manslaughter. Sadly, this is not the man's first brush with the law. He was previously behind bars for 30 days in 2012 for a drunk driving arrest. A this time it's unknown what the driver's blood alcohol content was, but police say there is enough evidence to prove the man was drunk.

The man's obvious failure to learn from previous mistakes shows that sometimes more drastic action may be needed to keep dangerous drivers off the roads. This man is being given the chance to live in the United States and he has twice failed to uphold his duty to be a responsible resident. Luckily if convicted, the man will likely face a harsher sentence this time around. Additionally, the officer's family may have the ability to pursue a wrongful death lawsuit.
