Discovery may lead to blood test for brain injuries

Researchers at the University of Rochester Medical Center recently announced a discovery that may lead to the creation of a simple blood test that would help physicians diagnose whether a patient has suffered a traumatic brain injury. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is currently considering whether to support the development of a simple test for these kinds of injuries. Currently, no such test exists.

Commercial drivers: increasing truck sizes would fuel accidents

Not for the first time, large trucking companies and mega-shippers are trying to get the law changed so they can deploy even larger and heavier trucks on our nation's roadways. The latest effort is underway now, and the U.S. Department of Transportation and the Federal Highway Administration are currently in the process of holding listening sessions and taking public comments on the proposal.

Allergy season reminder: you can be DWI on simple antihistamines

If you have an allergy like hay fever, it can sometimes seem that you can't breathe, see or concentrate. Symptoms of hay fever often include not only a stuffy or runny nose but itching, redness and watery eyes. Many people feel so bad that they don't want to leave the house, much less drive a car, while others do fine with an over-the-counter allergy medicine like Benadryl, Zyrtec or Claritin.

Class 1 (death risk) recall issued for EZ Breathe Atomizers

This week, an over-the-counter asthma-relief inhaler called the EZ Breathe Atomizer containing the medicine Asthmanefrin became the subject of a Class 1 recall by the Food and Drug Administration. In FDA parlance, a Class 1 as involving a reasonable probability of serious, adverse health effects or death if the defective medical device is used as instructed. The inhalers were also sold as "Asthmanefrin Starter Kits."
