A mother and son killed by a drunk driver

It is common sense that drinking and driving are dangerous. During the holiday season, it is likely that those traveling to holiday gatherings will be consuming alcohol. It is also likely that drivers will not properly comprehend how intoxicated they are. This often leads to intoxicated drivers getting behind the wheel. Moreover, this negligent action could lead to a serious and even fatal accident.

A tragic accident has members in the Travis County community mourning the loss of a mother and her son. According to reports, the kindergarten teacher and her high school senior son were killed in a drunk driving accident in Austin.

Authorities in Texas indicated that the 21-year-old man who crashed into the victim's car was traveling at an excessive speed--between 80-100 mph. It was also reported that the young driver was also over three times the legal limit, according to a blood alcohol test that was conducted.

The driver now faces 19 felony charges following the fatal accident. In addition to facing criminal penalties, the driver could also face civil liabilities. Loved ones on behalf of the deceased could file a wrongful death suit. This could result in compensation being awarded, which could be used to cover any expenses related to the fatal crash such as medical bills, funeral costs, lost wages, damages and pain and suffering.

Those affected by a drunk driving accident may not know that they might have a cause of action. This is often best determined by seeking guidance and advice about their situation. This can help them determine their appropriate actions as well as preserve their rights and interests.
