Town reduces speed limit and hopes to reduce car accidents

There are many factors that can go into causing a car accident on a Texas roadways. Drivers may be driving too quickly for weather conditions, drivers may not be paying close attention to the roadways, drivers can be under the influence of drugs or alcohol or the roadway's design may be unsafe. Whatever the cause, car accidents can be costly to everyone involved. Not only can they cause physical damage that must be repaired, but people can suffer serious - even fatal - injuries that may take both time and money to fix.

Sometimes there isn't much that innocent Texas drivers can do to avoid a car accident. However, citizens from one Texas town took matters in to their own hands when they realized that too many accidents were happening in their area. Following a series of fatal car accidents - including one that killed four construction workers - a petition was created on Facebook to lower the speed limit on the stretch of U.S. Highway 290 that moved through the town.

After only a couple days, the petition had almost 700 signatures. Within a month of the petition's creation officials from the Texas Department of Transportation approved a lowered speed limit on the dangerous stretch of road. Two months after the approval the speed limit was lowered from 65 mph to 60 mph. The hope now is that the lowered limit will result in fewer car accidents.

While the speed limit change might help this particular Texas town from seeing so many accidents in the future, it cannot help those who have already suffered as a result of a car accident. In these cases, a personal injury suit may be the victim's best option. Through a personal injury suit, negligent drivers can be held responsible for their reckless behavior. A suit can help provide the compensation that many victims need to heal from the accident.
