Former Houston police officer killed by drunk driver

An 18-year-old woman is in police custody following a suspected drunk driving accident. According to reports, a 61-year-old retired Houston police officer and his 52-year-old wife were riding a motorcycle when a car pulled out of a parking lot. The red Camaro apparently hit the motorcycle causing serious damage to the couple. The man was pronounced dead on the scene. However, the woman -- also a 30 year veteran of a local Texas police department -- was taken to a hospital. Reports say that the woman is in critical condition.

Following the accident, witnesses claim that the people inside the car left the vehicle and tried to blend in with the crowd. However, witnesses were able to identify the driver and the passengers of the vehicle. The driver was arrested for drunk driving. She is being held on $150,000 bond. Specifically, the 18-year-old is facing charges for intoxicated assault and intoxicated manslaughter.

Drunk driving accidents, such as this one, can be devastating to victims and their families. Many families -- including the family of this couple -- will never be the same following such a senseless act. Drunk driving is completely avoidable and only takes a little thought by drivers.

However, these accidents are all too common in Texas and families are left struggling as a result. Injuries and deaths caused by drunk drivers can cost families thousands of dollars in addition to the emotional pain they may be feeling. Through a personal injury or wrongful death suit, families can recover compensation from a drunk driver for their injuries. While this compensation will never take away the pain and shock caused by a drunk driving accident, it can help ease the financial burden on the family during a difficult time.
