Batteries recalled after fire in Texas family home

A Texas family returned home one day to find their house filled with smoke and fire. The family's baby monitor had apparently started on fire and had burned so badly that it melted kitchen counters. After an investigation by the family's insurance company, it was determined that the batteries used in the video baby monitor had overheated. Apparently, the heat then caused the battery to swell and eventually start ablaze. It was only after local media attention about the fire had occurred that the company was even willing to pay for some of the insurance costs caused by the fire.

This Texas family is apparently not the only one that has dealt with similar issues with their video baby monitors - produced by the company Summer Infant. According to reports, other families around the United States have reported similar overheating, swelling and battery fire issues.

Following an increase in these reports, Summer Infant has recalled this potentially dangerous product. The company is asking that people remove the rechargeable batteries from their unit and obtain a replacement battery from the company. This is the fourth recall of batteries the company has had in recent years - the company also recalled batteries in 2010, 2011 and 2012. Manufacturers will often recall products, like the batteries in this case, when a danger presents itself. However, sometimes theses defective products have already caused damage and injuries to Texas residents. These companies are responsible for that damage.

Under products liability laws, companies are responsible for death or injuries caused by dangerous products, defective medical devices, defective auto parts and other similar problems. Texas residents should make sure they know and understand their legal rights when they have been injured by a consumer product.
