Drunk truck driver kills 1 in Houston

Large trucks can always be scary for drivers on Texas' highways and interstates. They can be even more daunting on Houston's smaller city streets. These trucks tower over smaller vehicles and sometimes carry hazardous materials. However, tractor-trailers are necessary since they carry goods across the state and country. To make these large trucks safer for everyone, truck drivers are specially trained and are supposed to follow extra safety precautions.

Not all truck drivers are cautious. Many ignore regulations, drive negligently and are just plain dangerous. The danger of a semi-truck is escalated when drivers fail to follow traffic rules or drive under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

Recently, a truck driver in Houston has been arrested following a deadly truck accident. In this case, police say that the negligent truck driver ran a red light and smashed into a smaller SUV. A man -- a father of four -- inside that car was killed in the accident. Police allege, that in addition to running the red light, the truck driver was drunk at the time of the accident.

The drunk truck driver has been arrested and charged with intoxicated manslaughter. However, criminal charges will not go very far in helping this victim's family, which somehow has to move on without him. In addition to their emotional loss, families of those killed in truck accidents often suffer financial harm. There can be lost wages, medical expenses, funeral costs and more. These costs add up quickly for families as they are trying to deal with their grief.

Truck accident victims often suffer serious and fatal injuries. When this happens, families need to know their legal rights. A wrongful death or personal injury suit may be able to compensate a family who is struggling following a truck accident.
