Family seeks compensation following fatal workplace accident

Accidents happen every day in Texas. They can happen when people are driving, visiting a friend, at the store or even at work. When these accidents are deadly, it's important that the victims' family investigates to determine exactly what happened. While an investigation may give families some emotional healing, they can also help to determine if someone else's negligence caused the accident.

When someone's negligent behavior causes an accident, of any kind, that person should be held liable for the accident. Through a wrongful death suit, negligent parties can be held financially responsible for the damage caused by a fatal accident. This compensation can help families pay for medical expenses, lost wages, funeral costs and pain and suffering that occurred because of an accident.

Recently, a Texas family has won $4.6 million in a suit against their family member's employer. Following a fatal workplace accident, where two men were killed inside an 18-wheeler, the family sued three truck companies. The family says that the accident -- which occurred in 2010 -- was the result of the company's policies. The family claimed that the company's drivers were forced to work long hours even if they were tried and that this unreasonable schedule contributed to the accident that caused the deaths.

The jury agreed with the family and awarded the money. The companies have not commented about the jury's ruling.

Compensation from a wrongful death suit can never bring back a family member killed by a negligent person or company, however it can help give families the financial resources they need to move on from the accident. Texas families should ensure that they investigate their legal options following a fatal accident -- including one that takes place at work.
