When people drink in excess, alcohol can have a lot of ill effects on them. It can slow a person's reaction time, making it more difficult for people to perform everyday tasks. Alcohol can impair judgment resulting in poor decision making and reckless behavior. All of these effects can be a deadly combination when Texas residents choose to get behind the wheel of a motor vehicle and drive.
However, despite alcohol awareness education, drunk driving penalties and common sense, people still drive drunk. These drivers can easily cause serious drunk driving accidents that injure or kill others on the road.
When a car accident occurs as the result of a drunk driver, the car accident victims have legal rights. They can bring a civil suit in order to receive compensation for the injuries that they have suffered as a result of the accident. Recently, one Texas resident has done just that.
In this case, a man has sued another man following an accident. According to the suit, the man was riding in a car when it was struck by a drunk driver back in February. As a result of the accident, the man was injured. He is now seeking damages, court costs and interest from the drunk driver.
In a civil suit, like this one, drunk driving accident victims can hold drunk drivers accountable. These suits are not dependent on the outcome of criminal proceedings. They are separate legal proceedings and can result in additional penalties for the drunk driver. The damages can include compensation for medical expenses, lost wages, property damage, rehabilitation costs and other expenses caused by the drunk driving accident.
