Houston school bus driver charged in fatal accident

The loss of a loved one in a fatal traffic accident can devastate a family. If the victim was a breadwinner, the family's grief is compounded by financial anxiety. Fortunately, Texas law provides a remedy for the next of kin.

A recent accident in southeast Houston claimed the life of a 56-year-old cyclist. According to the Houston Police Department, the man was riding south on Hansen Road when he was struck and killed by a school bus. The bus was heading north on Hansen and was making a right turn to go east on Airport Boulevard when the collision occurred. There were no students on the bus at the time.

The 54-year-old school bus driver says she was unaware she had hit anyone and so continued on her route. At the end of her shift she went home, where she received a phone call telling her she had been in an accident. Police inspected buses at the city garage and found blood on the underside of one of them. The bus driver has been charged with failure to stop and render aid at an accident scene. She and her employer, a national company based in Ohio, were cooperative during the investigation.

Bus, truck and auto accidents claim a lot of lives every year in Texas. When the accident was caused by a negligent driver, the family of the victim has the right to bring a wrongful death lawsuit against that driver and recover damages. If the driver was employed by a bus or truck company, the company can also be held liable.
