What are some factors that can cause a semi truck accident?

Despite an array of state and federal trucking regulations, serious accidents involving heavy trucks continue to occur on Texas roads and highways. A semi truck accident can happen for any number of reasons. These reasons can be grouped into three main categories: equipment failure, truck driver negligence and truck company policies.

Equipment failure is the cause of many truck accidents. Negligent truck maintenance can lead to the failure of brake systems, tires and other safety-critical parts. In these cases, the truck driver, the truck company or both could be held liable. In some cases the manufacturer of the faulty equipment can be sued under a product liability design defect theory.

Truck driver negligence is another leading cause of truck accidents. Negligence can consist of speeding, failing to yield, failing to stop in time for slowed traffic, crossing the center line or any number of other unsafe driving actions. Failing to properly secure a load can also lead to accidents when the load falls onto the highway or the trailer becomes unstable. In many driver negligence cases the truck company can be held responsible for allowing an unqualified truck driver to operate the rig.

Truck company policies can also lead to unsafe situations and accidents. Some companies put pressure on their drivers to meet unrealistic delivery deadlines. This can lead to truck driver fatigue, speeding and improper loading of trucks.

Those who have been injured or suffered the loss of a loved one in a semi truck accident may have the right to recover compensation. Getting more information can help victims evaluate their options.
