Two people critically injured in Fort Bend County collision

A recent car accident in Fort Bend County shows how a negligent driver can alter a person's life in an instant. Two people suffered critical injuries in a wreck that was apparently caused when an impatient driver tried to pass some other vehicles by driving on the shoulder.

The accident happened on September 10 at around 5 p.m. on Highway 10A, in the vicinity of Harlem Road. According to the Fort Bend County Sheriff's Office, a driver going east on the highway drove onto the right shoulder to pass some traffic. In doing so he struck two other vehicles, causing one of them, a Toyota Tundra, to cross the center line. The Tundra was then involved in a head-on collision with a westbound pickup truck driven by a 26-year-old University of Houston student who was on his way home to Richmond.

The pickup truck caught fire and the student was pinned in the wreckage. Emergency personnel were able to free him and he was flown by helicopter to a local hospital. His injuries are devastating; his body was crushed and he has numerous broken bones. He had to be kept in a medically induced coma for several days after the crash.

Another driver was also seriously injured in the accident. The Sheriff's office says the 33-year-old man who tried to pass on the shoulder and thereby caused the accident has been charged with two counts of aggravated assault.

Accidents like this are a reminder of how fragile life can be. Those who are injured in a serious wreck like this one, and their family members, should keep in mind that they may have legal rights in order to hold a negligent driver accountable.
