Understanding the risks associated with the products you use

Before being sent to market, companies have an obligation to make certain their products are safe. For medical drugs, this includes, but is not limited to, rigorous testing by the company and approval by the United States Food and Drug Administration, also known as the FDA.

It is important to understand that even if a product has been approved by the FDA, it does not necessarily mean that the product is safe. There are often severe and serious side effects that may affect the user of the medication or drug. It is the company's duty, however, to make certain that any and all side effects are properly labeled and made clear to the consumer.

There are instances when a side effect is not recognized or apparent to a consumer until after the product goes to market. It is the pharmaceutical company's obligation to monitor the product's use and take proactive measures if it is determined that additional harmful side effects occur. A good example of this is asbestos, which was used throughout the construction industry for decades before it was determined that inhaling the particles caused lung cancer. These are called time lapse issues.

Before using a product, you should research its history and become familiar with its side effects and any lawsuits that may have arisen from them. If you suffer from an injury or illness due to using a product, defective medical device or medicine, you may be entitled to compensation. Anyone who find themselves in this type of situation may want to get more information about their legal rights.
