In 2014, Sugar Land had 21 drunk driving accidents with injuries

In recent years Texas has the unfortunate distinction of leading the nation in annual drunk driving deaths, with more than 1,300 alcohol-related road fatalities in 2012. As we discussed in an earlier post, when the numbers are adjusted for population, Texas drops to 10th place for drunk driving deaths per 100,000 people. Nonetheless, it's still far too many.

On a local level, in 2014 Sugar Land had 21 alcohol-related accidents that resulted in injuries. Other Texas cities with similar populations fared worse: Richardson had 34 alcohol-related injury crashes; Round Rock, 37; Wichita Falls, 38; San Angelo, 43; and Lewisville, 56. Odessa had the highest number of drunk driving injury crashes among similar-sized cities, with 87. A few cities similar in population to Sugar Land had fewer drunk driving injuries: Allen had 20; League City, 13; and Pearland 12.

Far too many lives have been cut short in Texas by intoxicated drivers. The loss of a parent, child, brother or sister in an accident caused by a drunk driver can scar a family forever. If the victim was a breadwinner, the family may face real financial hardship. Serious injuries resulting from a drunk driving accident can also cause hardship for entire families, especially if the victim is put out of work or faces significant medical expenses.

Those whose lives have been affected by a drunk driving accident have legal rights in the civil justice system. Families of those who were killed have the right to bring a wrongful death lawsuit and recover damages for loss of support and loss of companionship. Those who have been injured can sue for lost wages, medical expenses and pain and suffering.
