Wrong-Way Driving Is Consistently Fatal

There are nearly weekly news reports describing a fatal car accident along Texas highways, toll roads and city streets. While the types of vehicles involved and factors surrounding the accidents might change, the deadly nature of head-on collisions remains unchanged.

Motor vehicle accidents can typically be lumped into one of four categories: head-on collisions, side-impact (T-bone) collisions, rear-end collisions and vehicle rollovers. Of these, head-on collisions are commonly seen as the most dangerous. In these scenarios, the two vehicles collide front-to-front. The force of impact is significantly higher in a head-on collision because the speed of both vehicles is multiplied.

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) published a study that specifically looked at wrong-way accidents. These were head-on collisions that occurred because the driver was driving the wrong way in a clearly signed area - onramps and divided highways, for example.

Over the course of the study - the six years from 2004 to 2009, inclusive - the NTSB noted several interesting statistics. In all of those years, wrong-way fatal crashes accounted for approximately 3% of the fatal crashes on divided highways. A significant number - between 320 and 400 - of wrong-way crash fatalities occurred each year. Additionally, in two-thirds of the total fatalities (936 versus a total of 1,566) the driver showed indications of drug use.

No matter where you are driving in Texas, it is crucial that you remain aware of your surroundings. Even on a well-lit, clearly signed highway, you might look up to see a vehicle driving straight toward you.

If you were injured or you have lost a loved one in a serious vehicle accident, it is important to discuss your legal options with an experienced motor vehicle accident attorney.
