What can I do if I'm a victim of a hit-and-run driver?

When's the last time you read your auto insurance policy all the way from top to bottom? Perhaps a better question would be have you ever read that policy all the way from top to bottom?

It's always a good idea to read every insurance document you sign. It's especially important to be sure to read all the fine print. If you do and find you come across language that sparks questions, you should definitely speak with your agent. In some cases it might be a good idea to speak with an experienced auto accident attorney.

For example, if you've been in a collision and the other driver flees the scene before you can get any information, do you know what protection you have? Many Texas drivers might not be aware that they automatically have some uninsured or underinsured motorist coverage. According to state law auto insurance policies must include a UM or UIM provision, unless the policy holder rejects the coverage in writing.

Presuming you are the victim of a hit-and-run crash and you have not rejected that coverage, your insurance company may serve as a source of compensation for damage to property and injuries suffered. Other insurance coverage might also provide help. However, you should expect that the companies will do what they can to limit how much they have to pay. Obtaining the fullest measure of compensation depends on you fully understanding your rights and options.

So, while contacting your insurance company or companies in a timely manner after an accident is important, it might be equally important to discuss your case with an attorney before making any statements. What you say could be used to deny a claim. Initial attorney consultations are free, so there's good reason to make the effort.
