Life can change in a "snap."

Texting while driving is a habit that remains dangerously common. For those who do not recall a time before handheld devices, this form of communication has become almost instinctual, whether at home or behind the wheel of a car. Many drivers still question the risk. What could possibly happen when you take your eyes off the road for a split second?

"Life's more fun when you live in the moment," is the slogan for SnapChat, an image messaging application software product used to create multimedia messages. "Snaps" are photos or short videos edited with text, drawings, effects and filters.

For Wentworth Maynard, a moment changed his life.

SnapChat's miles-per-hour filter allows users to overlay text on a picture or video that documents the speed driven while taking and subsequently posting a "selfie." That feature is now the subject of a lawsuit filed against SnapChat and the driver responsible for the collision that occurred while "snapping" and driving at 107 mph.

According to the legal action filed by Maynard, the distracted driver was using Snapchat's now infamous filter. The former Uber driver suffered traumatic brain injuries and now requires a walker or wheelchair.

The plaintiff also claims that SnapChat knew of previous accidents that occurred while using their app at high speeds. Ignoring those incidents, they continued to make the filter available.

If only to add insult to Maynard's injuries, the driver responsible for the crash took a "snap" while in an ambulance. Her post read, "Lucky to be alive."

If you or a loved one suffered serious injuries at the hands of a distracted driver, take immediate action and contact a personal injury lawyer.
