Propane is commonly used for cookouts and trips. However, propane must be handled safely and with caution. Fires or explosions caused by propane can lead to catastrophic burn injuries and severe trauma. Our explosion accident attorneys understand the dangers of propane tank explosions and who should be held legally liable in the event of an accident.

At Reed & Terry, LLP, with offices in Sugar Land, Richmond, and Katy, TX, our attorneys can review your propane gas tank explosion case and determine if you should pursue compensation for damages.

Hazards When Propane Has No Odor

Many people do not realize this, but propane gas has no smell in its natural state. Regulations have ordered that propane manufacturers add a distinct smell (similar to rotten eggs or a skunk) to help warn people of a potential leak. When the smell is not added to the propane, the dangers of a fire or explosion are extremely high.

Problems with the Bleeder Valve on the Propane Tank

When the internal pressure within a propane tank increases, the risk of a tank explosion rises too. That’s why bleeder valves exist. These valves help relieve the internal pressure inside of a propane tank, preventing an explosion.

However, these bleeder valves can cause problems if they are faulty. If they do not work at all, there is no release for the pressure in the tank. Conversely, if a bleeder valve is left open for too long, an open flame or exposure to a heat element could cause a fire, which can then trigger an explosion.

Other Issues with the Design and Condition of the Tank

In addition to the hazards noted above, there are other conditions that could result in a propane tank explosion:

Injuries from an Exploding Propane Tank

The injuries people sustain from a propane tank explosion can be severe. The debris from the explosion from the tank itself and any nearby objects can result in serious cuts, facial trauma, head injuries, and brain damage. Burn injuries are also common from propane explosions, some of which can lead to nerve damage and permanent disfigurement.

Given the severity of these injuries, it’s important that propane explosion victims hold negligent parties accountable. Our attorneys have experience in product liability and negligence litigation. By working with our skilled lawyers, you can hold designers, manufacturers, and propane and propane accessory employees responsible for the harm they caused.
